rejection of what does not suit him.Second-guessing is looking out for hidden motives.Discounting is born of disrespect for the speaker and derides at the content.Relating is imbibing which has references to the listener's experience or background and missing out the rest as useless.Rehearsing is being busy with thinking about what to say when the speaker finishes his point.Forecasting is thinking very much ahead about an idea given by the speaker.Placating is agreeing with what everyone else says in order to avoid conflict, the result of which is missing out understanding.Similarly, Prof.Mathukutty ( 2001, pp.68-72) has identified nine contributors to poor listening.They are.1) inadequate language.2) difficult physical conditions like external disturbances.3) non-serious listening.4) lack of interest.5) antipathy towards speaker.6) over-enthusiasm for speaker.7) lack of confidence.8) impatience.9) strong convictions about the topic.Prof.Asha Kaul has mentioned eight deterrents to listening process.Lack of interest, ego, preoccupation with self, shuttling between past and present, fear, preconceived notions, feeling that he already knows (familiarity trap), and stress.We will discuss the most prominent reasons for poor listening in the following paragraphs.Mismatch between thought speed and speaking speed. A mind (of any human being while he is listening) can process 400 words per minute whereas a human being can speak only about 125 words only.During this free time gap available to the listener's mind, it wanders away into other topics since it has idle capacity and get distracted from the speaker's topic.This is one of the reasons why the mind wanders fast from one subject to the other.Lack of awareness. While there are various and numerous training programs conducted for reading, writing and speaking, no training program is ever conducted for listening, which on an average constitutes more than reading writing and speaking put together in total communication time.Mistaken belief that others would expect you to solve their problems. It is an erroneous belief that others would speak to us only in expectation of some contribution and would solicit us to solve their problem.But a few may solicit some help but majority want to share their feelings, achievement, grief, information etc.It is better to listen with an open mind than turn a deaf ear.Installation of filters. Communications come from different angles with different kinds of inputs.An individual neither has the capacity to absorb all nor is it useful to take everything that comes.Hence, an individual innately sets up filters in his mind to attend to some and disregard some by sifting through the information that comes.In the process of disregarding the presumably useless matter, he may turn ear to some useful information also.Secondly, the filter has another form when the listener thinks that he knows the topic and nothing much is left to learn from the speaker.This condition is known as closed- mindedness.In this condition also, the listener fails to get what is communicated.In such situation, he would only engage his mind in forming criticism or to deny the speaker's opinions or framing his argument as opposed to that of the speaker.It is how he misses the point.Thirdly, the speaker may already have an opinion about the speaker.This condition is known as premature evaluation.If it is a negative opinion, he would close his mind and miss the point.If he has a highly positive opinion, he may show over-enthusiasm to confirm his impression and thus may miss the point.Fourthly, some individuals have a low opinion about them and take any input as an attack on their weaknesses.They would not allow the information to come and remain busy in defending themselves.Distraction. The listener is distracted from the topic due to external disturbances, poor public address systems, disinterested co-audience etc.Certain personal factors like disturbing situation in the family etc also would distract the listener.All these distractions are attributed to 'noise' surrounding the listener.Lack of interest. If the listener has no interest in the topic or the speaker, he cannot listen.Inadequate language. The inadequate language of either the speaker or the listener would hinder the listening process.The language of the speaker should match that of the listener.Bad listening habits. Listener fails to get the point of the speaker as a result of his poor listening habits.These habits also constitute barriers to listening.If the barriers to listening, some of which have been discussed in the preceding, are person- specific and if an individual practices them continuously, they become habits.A brief mention of them is made here.1)Labeling the topic as uninteresting just by getting to know the title of the topic drives a person away from the important points.2)If the delivery is found to be poor, one may jump to the conclusion that topic is not worthy of listening.3)If one gets over-stimulated and angry about one or a few disagreeable points, he would miss the rest of the topic.4)Some persons concentrate only on facts and but not the principles that underlie such facts.5)One habit of listening is looking for logical order in the presentation.But some speakers don't appear to be orderly though they make strong points, which may be missed out if one is too concerned about the order.6)Some individuals pretend attention, though their minds are elsewhere and thus missing the points.7)Some listeners tend to create or tolerate distractions, which will not allow him to get the meaning intended.8)Some persons try to follow the easy points and evade the difficult ones, which may actually connect the whole.9)The attitude of criticizing the speaker or his delivery obstructs the listening and understanding.10)Some people wait to catch and attack the speaker when the speaker's views are contrary to those of the listeners.11)Another similar habit is that some people are busy rehearsing what they have to say without listening to what is being communicated by the speaker.All the aforementioned barriers present themselves along the stages of the process of listening.Familiarity with the stages of listening and the concomitant pitfalls would help one get over them while listening.

          When I was 21, a pickup truck backed into me, knocking me down so hard that my glasses fell off and a class ring I was wearing flew off.I didn't think much about it, but later in life I started having some back problems.A friend referred me to a chiropractor.I've been going to him for 15 years about twice a year when I get jammed up.He straightens me out.Recently, I called for an appointment but he was out of town.His voicemail referred me to a nearby chiropractor.I called and made an appointment.While the treatment to straighten me out was pretty much the same, the experience was magically different.The new chiropractor runs a lean practice; my existing chiropractor runs a mass production one.Current Chiropractor's Process.My existing chiropractor has you sign in and fill out a sheet describing your symptoms which takes five-to-ten minutes.His assistant then leads you into one of three examination rooms, where you wait.In essence, he has a batch size of three.After the treatment, the doctor spends a few minutes filling out paperwork to be added to your file.A typical visit takes about an hour.I didn't realize how unsatisfactory this was until I visited the new chiropractor.New Chiropractor's Process.I arrived a few minutes before my appointment expecting to have to fill out some paperwork.Instead, the doctor was ready and I was immediately led into her single exam room.She asked me a few questions and then started the exam.When she finished the treatment, she immediately turned to a computer terminal and using a touch screen, entered her notes about my treatment (in essence an electronic medical record which means little filing).She asked me to fill out some basic paperwork on my way out.She suggested I do a followup with my chiropractor in about a week.I was in and out in 15 minutes.I couldn't believe it.And she was $12 cheaper! Then I realized that she has a much smaller office (fewer exam rooms), so her fixed costs are lower.She uses electronic medical records, so her filing room is much smaller.I knew I had to get another glimpse into this operation.So, since my chiropractor was still going to be out of town, I scheduled a followup visit.The following week, I walked in as the new chiropractor was finishing with her current patient.I was immediately led into the exam room.We talked briefly about my progress; she adjusted my back; I paid and I was out in 15 minutes.Wow! Now that's my kind of patient care.With my existing chiropractor, I knew that if I arrived a little late, I'd still have plenty of time to do the paperwork and get in some reading.With the new chiropractor, I know that I'd better be on time.Her speed demands my timeliness without ever having to say anything, post any signs or sign anything.Time is Money!Medical care is no exception.My current chiropractor creates an assembly line with three patients in the queue at any time.Which means we have to wait 20-30 minutes in the exam room reading out-of-date magazines to fill the time while our back continues to spasm or be in pain.I realized that my medical doctor also has a waiting room and numerous exam rooms to create a batch of three-to-five patients.It takes an hour to see her as well, even if you go first thing in the morning.This new chiropractor understands the secrets of one-piece flow.One patient at a time, one exam room, and no "work" in process.Notes are entered immediately before you leave the room, not written on a piece of paper that needs to be filed.So am I going to switch chiropractors based on my experience? Let's examine the data I've collected so far..Current Doctor New Doctor 60 minutes 15 minutes.$12 cheaper!I figure my time is worth a lot.I can do a lot in 45 minutes that I can't do if I'm sitting idle in an exam room.What would you do?If you study any typical mass production doctor's office, you'll find that the doctor is always busy, but the patient is idle 90% of the time.To accelerate patient flow, you have to focus on the patient, not the doctor.You have to optimize the patient's time, not the doctor's.And when you do, you'll find that you get greater productivity and patient satisfaction, but you have to unlearn the mass production techniques of Henry Ford and embrace the simple principles of the Toyota Production System and Lean.The future belongs to those who embrace the principles of Lean and Six Sigma.Will your business be one of them?

          It is incredible how many people are constipated these days.I remember reading a couple years ago in a book that the Emergency Room had changed their definition of constipation to not having a bowel movement in over 3 days because they were having far too many people coming in with constipation (Chek,2004).That's scary to think about that.First thing that is important to understand is that you should be having at least 1 bowel movement every single day! If you have a healthy digestive tract at least once per day is the minimum (Lipski, 2005).If you're going longer than this, or your stool is compact and hard to pass this means you're constipated.What qualifies as "compact"? Your stool should be similar to the firmness of cookie dough or tooth paste.Given that you're still reading this article I'm guessing you're having problems with constipation.It's been my experience most people don't invest their down time investigating constipation just for the fun of it.The great news for you is that for most people fixing up constipation isn't too difficult.I've never worked with a person who was constipated that didn't start having healthy bowel movements within 3-6 months.Typically for most within 2-4 weeks they start to get rid of their constipation with a few easy changes to their nutrition and lifestyle.If you are chronically or frequently constipated there are a number of reasons that you may want to get your bowel movements working properly.I have seen my clients who struggle with constipation experience some of the following changes through making nutrition and lifestyle changes. flatter stomach, disappearance bloating and stomach cramping, losing 2-4 pounds, acne and other skin conditions gone, energy levels sky rocketing, and a host of other great side effect.If that isn't enough to get your feeling really motivated about getting your bowel movements on track you can look at the fact that 1 in 14 women and 1 in 15 men will develop colorectal cancer in their lifetime (Colon Cancer Canada, ND).And this number is and has been on the rise for several years.Hopefully that fact makes these lifestyle and nutrition changes seem a lot easier to make.First thing you are going to want to test is how long it takes food to start to go from your mouth to the toilet bowl.This will give you an idea of how backed up you are.This test is incredibly complicated and expensive.Okay I lied it's actually only going to cost you a couple bucks.All you have to do is go to your grocery store and purchase some beets (real beats unprocessed, not canned).Okay now for the complicated test.Cook the beets however you like, bake them, boil them, whatever floats your boat.Eat the beets for lunch with whatever you normally would have.Then.Wait and see how long it takes until you have a bowel movement where you can see red in your stool.The beets will leave a stain of red in your stool and this will tell you how long it took to get from your mouth out the back door so to speak.Okay maybe the test isn't that complicated, but I'm simple guy I like simple tests.With my clients ideally I would like them to start seeing the beets 12-24 hours after they ate them.If it falls in this time frame your bowel movements are moving through you at a good pace.You will probably see the beets for 1-2 more bowel movements after the initial one, don't' worry this is normal.If you don't see them for over 24 hours you are defiantly backed up.Why are you constipated? Well everyone is different and there could be a number of different reasons why.First it might be a good idea to talk to your physician to make sure that there are no mechanical problems.If your physician gives you the all clear, I can tell you from my own experience working with people there are a few incredibly common reasons why you're probably backed up.1.Dehydration. This is the most common cause in my experience working with my clients.Most people tell me I drink plenty of fluids this can't be the problem.Stop and read all of this to make sure you are not dehydrated.First you should be drinking an ounce for every pound of body weight.I weigh around 150 pounds so the minimum water I should consume in a day is 75 ounces or around 2.5 litters.Now when I say water I mean water.Not beverages that contain water.I don't mean coke, sprite, juice, flavoured water, alcohol, coffee, tea, etc.I mean WATER.Caffeine also dehydrates you.Take out all coffee, teas, energy drinks, pop, etc.Even if it is "decaf" most of them still actually contain caffeine, just less of it than normal.So take them out of your diet.If you aren't going to take these out of your diet understand this is probably a huge factor if not the cause of your constipation.If you won't take them out of your diet at least increase water 250ml or a cup for every cup of those beverages you drink in addition to the ounce for every pound of body weight mentioned above.2.Processed Food. Most people this day and age have no idea what they are putting into their mouth.When was the last time you actually read all the ingredients on the label of any of the food you ate? Start reading the ingredients and pay attention to how many ingredients you can find that are some chemical you've never heard of! I could get someone with a PHD in biochemistry and they wouldn't know what the hell was in most of the food at our grocery stores.The thing is your intestines and liver don't' have a clue what the hell that "food" is either.This often times causes issues with people getting backed up.Start reading the labels of all the food you put in your mouth.If you don't recognize an ingredient that's listed don't put it into your body!               Interestingly enough when I was at Barnes & Noble the other day, I noticed there was a whole aisle filled with career books, and advice on how to get a job.No, I am not looking for a job myself, but I found that rather intriguing.Consider if you will that with so many people out of work, or underemployed that folks are looking for the best strategies to find meaningful work.Okay so let's go ahead and talk about this for second shall we?Yesterday, I picked up an interesting book at the used bookstore for only one dollar with my trade-in.Although the book was written in 2007 it is fast-paced reading and actually had some really good insight.I appreciate that, because as I sit in Starbucks and talk to various folks around our community, I am amazed at how many people are either looking for a job, or would like to move up now that the economy is supposedly getting better.The name of this book is;."Rules for Renegades - How to Make More Money and Rock Your Career and Revel in Your Individuality," by Christine Comaford-Lynch, McGraw Hill, New York, NY, 2007, 268 pages, ISBN. 0-07-148975-4.It turns out that the writer is an entrepreneurial lady and has actually started five new companies in her career.She tells the reader had to get over rejection when your resume is sent into the proverbial round file, as well as how to network in the New World, and enjoy yourself while doing it.Some other interesting advice is how to save your money, and budget but still enjoy life while looking for a job.She explains that "everything is an illusion, so pick one that's empowering," and go for it.What she is getting at is there are so many self-help gurus out there with all sorts of brilliant suggestions to help motivate you.Depending on what type of personality you are, there is certainly a methodology which will work for you.So, get busy and pick one, and get out there and hustle.If you don't have an MBA, but you'd still like to be in management, she suggests ways you can get that done as well.Overall, I found the advice to be quite good, and now I am empowered with more information to suggest to all those people I meet each and every day who are looking for work.If you know of someone that doesn't have a job, and is looking for a job, as we all do, perhaps you will also recommend this book to them.Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

                Doctoral students frequently need dissertation help in tracking and organizing literature.It is a daunting task - after all you will likely read on average three articles a week for over a year in order to accumulate the substantial understanding of your topic on which to base your expertise.While all of these will not be used in the final review of literature, it is likely that you will need to have about 75 peer-reviewed articles referenced in Chapter two.This article discusses EndNote as a database through which you will be able to build a robust library, one that allows you to notate, sort and later recall for writing the vast quantity of ideas you are collecting, for later use in your lit review.First Step - collect quality articles.Most universities track the relevance and scholarship of a review of literature through whether and to what extent your chapter references peer-reviewed work.Not all books are peer-reviewed, but many by reputable houses such as Sage, Pearson, McGraw Hill, Routledge, etc.Will be.Check the publishing house for details.The same is true of journal articles and here you can check the front flap or the guidelines.Second Step - take clear notes and be consistent as to what fields you put them in.EndNote had four or five useful fields for entry at the bottom of the database.Let's use the abstract field as an example.Many students would cut and paste the authors abstract here which is fair enough, however authors' abstracts vary widely as to the types of information they include.More rigorous journals use a format I have come to like, which involves stating the purpose, scope, methodology, findings, conclusions, limitations, and contributions of the work.I would recommend that, whether you put it in the abstract field or not, that you list this information in one consistent field in the data base.However you use your fields ALWAYS be sure to note what was of interest to you when you chose this article.You will likely be writing "a donkey's age" later (as they say in Ireland) and you will be dismayed by how much you forget.Third Step - Sort your lit into groups.EndNote has the groups function in the left hand column.AS you begin to see subtopics of interest, start a group and sort what you have read that fits under this subtopic into the group.EndNote makes it easy you just click and drag.Fourth Step - Attach your PDFs or cut and paste the significant portions of the work.When you are writing there will be cases when you want to go back and drill deeper into the ideas of one or more authors.Perhaps you come to understand a subtlety and want to go back to see if your ideas hold up.Here you will need to be able to get to the original work.Since many online databases deliver work in PDF format, EndNote makes this easy - reference/attach file menu, browse to your work and link it in.Since it is possible that you may move computers during your dissertation process, it will be helpful to place all your EndNote PDFs in one file - that way you can re-establish the links as necessary.These four steps will help you build the robust and accessible library that you need.Work the process and keep your reading and notating level to at least three articles a week and you will soon be ready to come back to your library and use it as a tool for writing.That will be the subject of another article in this series.
