1st Textbook on Sleep Psychiatry

1st Textbook on Sleep Psychiatry

An informative textbook confirming a newly established field. Sleep Psychiatry.Book Review by Nikos M.Linardakis, M.D.The fascinating world of sleep has achieved more clinical research inquiries over the past few decades. However, Sleep Psychiatry has become a newly established subspecialty in sleep medicine. It affords a need for a much-awaited textbook on sleep psychiatry.Every physician has been exposed to patients with a chief complaint of sleep deprivation or a sleep disorder of another kind. This is the first textbook in the field of sleep psychiatry, and presents a comprehensive coverage of topics that will undoubtedly introduce and expand on new discoveries in the near future. This peer-reviewed textbook is a masterful and detailed presentation of sleep psychiatry.Dr.Alexander Golbin's editorial presentation of important concepts and the scientific exploration into the world of sleep psychiatry is an example of a skilled educator, and a leading research and clinical physician. My favorite chapters are those that cover the sleep-wake cycles and the effect on daytime alertness and behavior. The most important of all discoveries about sleep was the recognition that sleep is not a passive state of rest, but a complicated and active cyclic process.Of equal importance, normal sleep was recognized as the foundation for normal alertness, and abnormal sleep as the foundation for abnormal alertness and psychiatric problems. This probability is evaluated and confirmed in research papers showing significant advantage to sleep-alertness relationships. The new book Sleep Psychiatry, written by an international team of experts and published in England by Taylor & Francis /CRC Group, for the first time, categorizes and reviews published and original research data.Sleep Psychiatry presents this information and forms comprehensive concepts of physiological origin and discusses the basis of psychiatric problems, establishing a new field of sleep medicine-Sleep Psychiatry.Twenty-eight chapters of the book, although written for specialists, are clear and simple, in reader-friendly style, and present multiple facts from internationally recognized researchers. It is a highly informative and useful resource.Among other topics, the authors convincingly present, review and confirm major conclusions..1.Sleep is a physiological basis for normal daytime mental and emotional functions.2.During the early development in infancy, the brain mechanism of sleep developed first and became a foundation for the development of normal alertness, attention and productive wakefulness.3.If sleep mechanisms are deviated in early childhood, it may lead to attention, alertness and emotional problems later on in life.4.Sleep is a healing, compensatory and recovery state.5.Sleep, if abnormal, may trigger sickness and even death.6.Treatment of sleep pathology may help in the treatment of some medical and psychiatric disorders.Sleep Psychiatry was written as a global collaboration, with chapter authors from several university and research institutions.Among many interesting concepts, presented in this book are. the "search activity" by Dr.Vadim Rotenberg from Israel, an evolutionary approach to human sleep development by Dr.Alexander Shepovalnikov from Russia, an adaptive theory of parasomnias and sleep origin of daytime habits by Dr.Alexander Golbin from the USA, and the dangerous and forensic aspects of sleep by USA-Canadian research teams. The quality of print in the book also leverages the ability for a clinician, doctorate candidate or sleep researcher to enjoy the multitude of graphic presentations and important charts and tables. The earlier chapters in the book are somewhat broad; however, they introduce the reader to this new field. At times the text was missing some additional information that would clarify some voids and unknowns; though, later on in the book, each area was thoroughly covered and the reader is left with a feeling that the book was written to increase the appetite to read and learn more-unlike most textbooks; I was intrigued by every new chapter that brought with it a new understanding of a pioneering field. The last few decades and millions of dollars in research funding have produced an overwhelming amount of evidence to support the significant findings in sleep psychiatry. The book carefully presents these findings in a comprehensive and peer-reviewed format.Sleep Psychiatry is a fascinating and monumental work which will definitely elicit active discussions and further research to prove or disprove these interesting and fresh approaches for the discovery and understanding of the biologic, physiologic, and psychiatric benefits for millions of patients with sleep and psychiatric problems.I look forward to your review and an increase in the establishment of the field of Sleep Psychiatry.Sleep Psychiatry is sure to become "required reading" for all professionals in sleep medicine and in psychiatry.Nikos Linardakis, M.D.Is a physician executive for Tharos Laboratories, Inc.In Boston, Massachusetts. He is the author of several medical books, and was Editor-in-Chief at McGraw-Hill Companies Health Sciences Division, New York. You can e-mail your comments to Dr.Nikos Linardakis at Nikos@Tharoslabs.Com.Purchase physician-fomulated NYTEX - a natural supplement that contains a powerful antioxidant, PROCIDIN, and the proper dosage of ingredients & vitamins that address all cycles of sleep.[http.//www.Buynytex.Com].Sleep Psychiatry Alexander Golbin, M.D., Ph.D., et.Al, First Edition, Taylor & Francis Publishing/CRC Group, London, England, 2004 ISBN Number. 1 - 842 14 -145 -.

Constipation - What's Really Backing You Up?

    Constipation - What

It is incredible how many people are constipated these days.I remember reading a couple years ago in a book that the Emergency Room had changed their definition of constipation to not having a bowel movement in over 3 days because they were having far too many people coming in with constipation (Chek,2004).That's scary to think about that.First thing that is important to understand is that you should be having at least 1 bowel movement every single day! If you have a healthy digestive tract at least once per day is the minimum (Lipski, 2005).If you're going longer than this, or your stool is compact and hard to pass this means you're constipated. What qualifies as "compact"? Your stool should be similar to the firmness of cookie dough or tooth paste.Given that you're still reading this article I'm guessing you're having problems with constipation. It's been my experience most people don't invest their down time investigating constipation just for the fun of it.The great news for you is that for most people fixing up constipation isn't too difficult.I've never worked with a person who was constipated that didn't start having healthy bowel movements within 3-6 months.Typically for most within 2-4 weeks they start to get rid of their constipation with a few easy changes to their nutrition and lifestyle. If you are chronically or frequently constipated there are a number of reasons that you may want to get your bowel movements working properly.I have seen my clients who struggle with constipation experience some of the following changes through making nutrition and lifestyle changes. flatter stomach, disappearance bloating and stomach cramping, losing 2-4 pounds, acne and other skin conditions gone, energy levels sky rocketing, and a host of other great side effect. If that isn't enough to get your feeling really motivated about getting your bowel movements on track you can look at the fact that 1 in 14 women and 1 in 15 men will develop colorectal cancer in their lifetime (Colon Cancer Canada, ND).And this number is and has been on the rise for several years.Hopefully that fact makes these lifestyle and nutrition changes seem a lot easier to make.First thing you are going to want to test is how long it takes food to start to go from your mouth to the toilet bowl. This will give you an idea of how backed up you are. This test is incredibly complicated and expensive.Okay I lied it's actually only going to cost you a couple bucks. All you have to do is go to your grocery store and purchase some beets (real beats unprocessed, not canned).Okay now for the complicated test.Cook the beets however you like, bake them, boil them, whatever floats your boat.Eat the beets for lunch with whatever you normally would have.Then.Wait and see how long it takes until you have a bowel movement where you can see red in your stool. The beets will leave a stain of red in your stool and this will tell you how long it took to get from your mouth out the back door so to speak.Okay maybe the test isn't that complicated, but I'm simple guy I like simple tests. With my clients ideally I would like them to start seeing the beets 12-24 hours after they ate them.If it falls in this time frame your bowel movements are moving through you at a good pace. You will probably see the beets for 1-2 more bowel movements after the initial one, don't' worry this is normal. If you don't see them for over 24 hours you are defiantly backed up.Why are you constipated? Well everyone is different and there could be a number of different reasons why.First it might be a good idea to talk to your physician to make sure that there are no mechanical problems. If your physician gives you the all clear, I can tell you from my own experience working with people there are a few incredibly common reasons why you're probably backed up.1.Dehydration. This is the most common cause in my experience working with my clients. Most people tell me I drink plenty of fluids this can't be the problem.Stop and read all of this to make sure you are not dehydrated.First you should be drinking an ounce for every pound of body weight.I weigh around 150 pounds so the minimum water I should consume in a day is 75 ounces or around 2.5 litters. Now when I say water I mean water. Not beverages that contain water.I don't mean coke, sprite, juice, flavoured water, alcohol, coffee, tea, etc.I mean WATER.Caffeine also dehydrates you.Take out all coffee, teas, energy drinks, pop, etc.Even if it is "decaf" most of them still actually contain caffeine, just less of it than normal. So take them out of your diet.If you aren't going to take these out of your diet understand this is probably a huge factor if not the cause of your constipation. If you won't take them out of your diet at least increase water 250ml or a cup for every cup of those beverages you drink in addition to the ounce for every pound of body weight mentioned above.2.Processed Food. Most people this day and age have no idea what they are putting into their mouth. When was the last time you actually read all the ingredients on the label of any of the food you ate? Start reading the ingredients and pay attention to how many ingredients you can find that are some chemical you've never heard of! I could get someone with a PHD in biochemistry and they wouldn't know what the hell was in most of the food at our grocery stores. The thing is your intestines and liver don't' have a clue what the hell that "food" is either. This often times causes issues with people getting backed up.Start reading the labels of all the food you put in your mouth. If you don't recognize an ingredient that's listed don't put it into your body! Find an alternative food that you can actually read all the ingredients listed.Okay there you go, you have the two biggest causes of constipation. If you aren't doing those two things right now, start working on them.Once you've been getting enough water for 4 weeks in a row and once you haven't eaten any food with ingredients you don't recognize for 4 weeks see how your bowel movements improve. You can re-check your transit time using the really "expensive" and "complicated" test we went through above. If you're still not getting a healthy transit time or your stool is still compact and hard to pass then give me a call at (613) 818-5334 or shoot me an email at info@peaknutritionandhealth.Com to book a free consultation because you could have other more complicated barriers such as food intolerances, parasites, or fungal issues that are possibly related to your constipation.References Chek, P., 2004."How to Eat Move and Be Healthy." How to Conjugate Spanish Verbs With Spelling Changes in the Preterit or Past Tense

How to Conjugate Spanish Verbs With Spelling Changes in the Preterit or Past Tense

Let's now learn how to conjugate Spanish verbs with spell changes in the preterit or past tense. One of the first things you need to know to learn how to conjugate Spanish verbs with spelling changes in the preterit tense is that most of the time spelling and sound rules will override verb conjugations.Verbs ending in car, gar, and zar are some of these Spanish verbs with spelling changes in the past tense, and it only happens with the pronoun yo.The consonant c is replaced with qu, g is replaced with gu and z is replaced with c.Take a look at the following conjugations for the verbs secar (to dry), llegar (to arrive), and empezar (to begin) with the pronoun yo.Pronoun in Spanish c - qu g - gu z - c yo sequ llegu empec.Other similar verbs are atacar (to attack), secar (to pull out), tocar (to touch), apagar (to turn off), navegar (to navigate/to sail), pagar (to pay), almorzar (to have lunch or mid-morning meal), empezar (to start), reemplazar (to substitute for / to replace). When a verb has a vowel before -ER or -IR endings the "I" of the preterit tense ending is replaced with y when it is conjugated for any of the following pronouns. l, ella, usted, ellos, ellas, and ustedes. Some of these verbs are construir (to build), caer (to fall), huir (to flee/to run away), incluir (to include), leer (to read), etc.See the following conjugation.Creer - to believe yo cre - I believed t creiste - you believed l/ella crey - he/she believed usted crey - you believed (formal) nosotros cremos - we believed ustedes creyeron - you believed (plural) ellos/ellas creyeron - they believed (masculine or feminine). Two exceptions are traer (to bring) and distraer (to distract).Considering that how to conjugate Spanish verbs with spelling changes in the past tense can be a very challenging area of Spanish for native English speakers studying Spanish there are several verb conjugation tools that I have recommended to my own private students..1.Learning Like Crazy's Verbarrator software for practicing how to conjugate over 500 verbs in every tense which is available at Amazon.Com and Barnes and Noble bookstores.2.Dorothy Richmond's Practice Make Perfect Spanish Verb Tenses which is also available at Amazon.Com and Barnes and Noble bookstores.3.McGraw Hill's Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs which is also available at Amazon.Com and Barnes and Noble bookstores.

Facebook, I'm Just Not That Into You - A Social Media Perspective

      Facebook, I

(An honest break up after almost 4 years).Dear Facebook,.I know we've known each other since 2006.Believe me, this is not an easy conversation to have. We've both been through a lot.I raised $750,000, you raised over $400,000,000, I have a small team of mostly volunteers, you have over 1200 employees worldwide. We both have made our share of brilliant and stupid decisions. The spotlight and our 15 plus minutes of fame have been good. You've gotten a few more national, network shows than I have. That's OK, I'll be catching up soon.I have to admit, I started my relationship with you because of intense peer pressure and the media hype.Everyone was doing you.And yes, I wanted to feel that connection too.In the beginning you were a fairly low maintenance hook up.It was casual fun, a few applications and goofy ways to gift and entertain others. Then you got kind of way too social and now have hundreds of millions of others that you connect with too. Some are respectable citizens, some are monkeys on the run from the St Pete police and some are pure creepy pedophiles.Maybe it's my conservative values, but it's feeling sleazy to me.OK that lack of real intimacy was attractive at first. You never asked for more than my headshot and my hip cellulite was never exposed. And I enjoyed our time together. But recently things have changed. You look different. Our goals are miles apart.I need to focus on things that move my business dial. You are all over the place.I'm a design snob and your environment is so yellow pages looking. And all those time sucking, useless apps are really starting to get on my last nerve.I need a break. At least six months of no checking in, no dialogue, no meeting new friends or small talk with old ones.No wall talk, no pics posting and absolutely no video, unless 60 Minutes calls.I'm leading a start up, with a clear business mission.I've got limited resources and need to get solid ROI on every investment of time.I've got to stay laser focused on growing a sustainable venture, not share beer shots with a bunch of people I hardly know.Don't take this wrong. You are great, for millions others out there. This is all about me.They are my issues. So who am I seeing? Well it's complicated. There are few.LinkedIn seems to really meet my needs. And Twitter gives me instant gratification. And there's a few blogs too, that I really value.I'm not committed to any one thing. You know that's not my style. But this thing with you has got to take a serious break. It's going nowhere.Call me selfish, but you do not bring me any traffic for time involved. It's just freaking frustrating. In the past I've been on the down low about all of this, but I feel it's my responsibility to tell my other friends, especially other startups and entrepreneurs. No one or business person should ever feel guilt about not being immersed or active in Facebook. When you are running a business, you must spend your time on things that matter and make a difference.I've thought long and hard about this.I believe this is the best for me and my future. And one more important thing.I've respected your privacy.I've not shared your personal data or where you buy your underwear.I trust you will do the same. It's been fun, but I've had enough.I'm officially taking a Facebook break for at least 6 full months. If you need me, you've got my Twitter handle and my phone number.Do you still use a phone?Anyhow, ciao for now!Karen Post.P.S., I'm serious as a heart attack.Social media is a wonderful thing, but every tool is not right for every business. If your time is limited, like mine, leverage what brings you leads and helps build your brand.Save Facebook for when you've made lots of money and you just want to kill some time.

      Basket Trading for Beginners

      Basket Trading for Beginners

In this section, we will discuss the following topics..-Basket Trading Strategies (general concepts) -Basket Trading ETF's versus ETF's -Basket Trading ETF's versus Stocks -Basket Trading Stocks versus Stocks. The general concept of Basket Trading usually involves buying a Basket of Stocks or ETF's and selling short a second Basket of Stocks or ETF's.This trade can last as little as a few minutes or as long as a trader wants. It can involve as many or as few stocks or ETF's as a trader wants. The concept makes sense when compared with the natural ebb and flow of money in the Equities Markets. Here's why..Most Money Managers are bound by certain rules that require them to keep a certain percentage of their portfolios invested at all times. They are also forbidden from short selling. This means that when the market as a whole moves up (when I refer to the market, I am referring to the S&P 500), Money Managers participate in the uptrend by selling portions of their holdings in safe haven sectors like Consumer Staples, Healthcare and Utilities to raise capital. They use the proceeds from that sale to invest in riskier sectors like Technology, Energy, Consumer Discretionary or Financials. This is called a "Risk On" market. When the uptrend is over, they sell the riskier sectors and buy back the safe haven sectors and the cycle starts all over. This is called a "Risk Off" market. This is why trading an entire market index as a whole can lack volatility. When the S&P is moving up, generally a portion of the market is being sold (usually safe haven sectors). When it's moving down, the opposite is occurring. This causes instruments like the SPY ETF or the ES E-Mini Futures contract to move in a choppier manner than most traders would like. That's why it's important to drill down and really look at what you're trading. Many people trade the S&P E-mini contract but give little thought to the components within the contract.Careful examination of this trading instrument will show you that it is constructed to avoid volatility.Basket trading provides higher probabilities than trading an entire index like the S&P 500 and here's why. This S&P is Market Capitalization Weighted which means companies with larger Market Caps hold more weight in the index.Large Cap holdings in any portfolio will dampen volatility and every trader knows how badly volatility is needed to be a profitable trader. However McGraw-Hill (the managers of the components of S&P) really take it to extremes.Read on.Trading a Market Cap Weighted Index as a whole should not be a problem except for the fact that with S&P, the contrast between Large Cap and Small Cap companies is huge.Consider this..-Only 10% of S&P holdings (that's only 50 of the 500 companies) control more than 50% of the weight in the index.-To take it a step further, only 20% of the holdings (100 out of 500 companies) control more than 65% of the weight in the index. In short, what this means for you as a trader is that trading S&P as an instrument (which is the most commonly traded instrument among new day traders) can really dampen volatility. The top weighted index holdings include names like Johnson and Johnson, Phillip Morris, Berkshire Hathaway, Proctor & Gamble and Pfizer, to name a few.I'm not sure about you, but I could never make a living trading blue chip names like these because they lack volatility. And let's face it, all Trading Strategies share one common goal. to get into a trade where there will be volatility so that the price moves quickly away from your entry point and into profitable territory. If you trade the S&P 500 as a whole index, during any trend (up or down), part of the index is being sold and part is being bought. This keeps all moves to the upside or downside more dampened (less volatile) than you might see if you were Basket Trading the sectors or stocks separately.Basket trading would involve going long the four riskier sectors while simultaneously shorting the three safe haven sectors. This smooths your trade out dramatically reducing the back and fill price action that you normally see when viewing the entire market as one instrument. To take it a step further, consider only trading the leading weighted stocks in the growth sectors and shorting the leading weighted stocks in the safe haven sectors. This will provide even further upward yield.

        Should You Be Taking CoQ10?

        Should You Be Taking CoQ10?

In my quest for the "supplemental" truth it seems necessary to explore the qualities of the latest hot supplement topic. Coenzyme Q10.Everywhere I turn these days, I'm reading about the benefits which range the gamut from anti-aging to heart protection. But, is Coenzyme Q10 right for you? Read on!First. The Claims..A Rich Source of Anti-oxidants..Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as ubiquinone, has been documented as a rich source of anti-oxidants.In much of the research and articles I've read, CoQ10 is consistently thought to act in much the same way that vitamin E does.In fact, CoQ10 has been found in many studies to be much more effective than vitamin E in lowering cholesterol and creating an optimum environment for the cells to create energy.Other strong anti-oxidant qualities include. the reduction in risk of heart disease and regulation of blood pressure.Stimulates The Immune System..CoQ10 has also been shown to be an important component in the function of the immune system. It both inhibits bacteria as well as increases immune function. It also increases white blood cell production. In many cases when the body is deficient in CoQ10 (which becomes more common as we age) the immune system becomes compromised.Supplementation can often counteract this.Anti-aging Qualities..Studies also suggest there is possible anti-aging effects in CoQ10.It has been shown to slow the aging process through its antioxidant qualities.Anti-oxidants, as we know, prevent "free radical" damage - the instability of cells which causes them to mutate unnecessarily creating everything from sun damage to cancer.CoQ10 has also been noted to increase endurance during exercise and is currently being used as a therapy and reversal for Alzheimer's.Heart Health ..CoQ10 depletion has also been linked to hypertension. Therefore supplementation of CoQ10 is currently being used as a natural remedy to decrease blood pressure. It is also recommended in reducing the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and for prevention of the oxidation of LDL cholesterol which causes plaque.Oral Health..Like green tea, CoQ10 has been thought to promote oral health.CoQ10 is supposed - in many studies - to slow or arrest periodontal disease.CoQ10 also protects the gums and heals damage from gingivitis as well as protects teeth from cavities.Weight Loss..Obesity can lead to a decrease in the production of CoQ10.Therefore, in many of the studies I found, supplementation of CoQ10 was given to both to patients suffering from obesity and patients looking to manage weight. The Bad News. What's the bad news? Not much. There doesn't seem to be any documented toxicity from supplementing with CoQ10.However, if you are pregnant or a nursing mom it would be best not to take this supplement as the long terms effects have not been recorded. Some reports suggest CoQ10 will decrease the effectiveness of warfarin - a blood thinner, but there is no evidence to suggest it is decidedly so.Finally, the dosage should not exceed 200 mg per day as this - in some cases - has been shown to cause diarrhea and nausea.Other FAQ's About CoQ10..How much CoQ10 is enough to reap the benefits? For Best results (in the literature I consulted) 1, 30-60mg capsule up to 3X per day is a safe dosage when taken with meals. When choosing a supplement, it is important to be sure the capsule is in CoQ10's natural form which is dark bright yellow in color. In Summation..Once again, in this scientist's opinion, I would mark CoQ10 as being well worth your consideration.Do your homework, however. As with any change in your healthcare program, always consult your healthcare practitioner. If you are on any other medications be sure to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the possibility of interaction.Conduct your own research project. Here are some great resources that will help get you started.Research for this article has been created through careful consideration of research and articles appearing on WebMD and though several working texts which include..Balch, Phyllis A., CNC.Prescriptions for Nutritional Healing.New York. Penguin Putnam, 2004.Khalsa, Dharma Singh, M.D.Food As Medicine.New York. Simon & Schuster, 2003.Mindell, Earl, R.P.H., Ph.D.The Vitamin Bible.New York. Warner Books, 2004.Mindell, Earl, R.P.H., Ph.D.Prescription Alternatives.New York. McGraw-Hill, 2003.

Make Money on eBay - Can the Little Guy Still Make Money on eBay?

Make Money on eBay - Can the Little Guy Still Make Money on eBay?

I get this question a lot and it has three answers. "Yes," "no" and "maybe." Let's see which one applies to you. There is no doubt that it is much harder for the individual operating out of their home to make money on eBay today than it was even a couple of years ago. When I started on eBay in 1999, eBay was a license to print money.A little guy (or gal) like your or me could sell almost anything and make money. As far as finding merchandise to sell you could source garage sales or buy surplus and overstocked products from hundreds of dealers.Today, however, many of those same dealers that use to sell to me, are now selling the same items on eBay at the same price they used to sell to me.There are still some overstock dealers who can supply product, but they are fewer. There is also much more competition on eBay today than in past years.Today there are over 1000 large companies with employees, warehouses and sophisticated distribution systems competing for the eBay bidder. In addition to the independent large power sellers there are companies such as Disney, Lands End, Bloomingdales Department Store and many others who either list directly on eBay or have hired companies to sell their merchandise for them under another name.Three Strategies to Make Money on eBay.So what is the little guy to do? There are three basic strategies to succeeding on eBay today. There may be more --but I know these three work, because I have done them and in fact still do them.Make Money on eBay by Selling Used Goods. The first strategy is to sell used goods including antiques and collectibles. The market for any type of used goods on eBay will always be the purview of the smaller seller. The difficulty of sourcing merchandise makes this a difficult area for large companies. At the higher end of the used market are art, antiques, collectibles and rare books. If you have some knowledge and experience in this field, it is very easy to enter. My wife and I had a small antiques shop before we started selling on eBay, so we knew what was valuable, what the values of items were and where to find them.I can walk into any small town auction in America on any weekend and buy several items that I can turn around and sell on eBay the following week and double my money or more.In fact we still do this occasionally.About a month before I was writing this article, we attended a small town auction in Mt.Vernon, Washington.I bought a box of 1950s vintage advertising tins as a lot for $175.I broke up the lot and sold the pieces individually on eBay over a 14-day period for over $400 total before eBay and PayPal fees. There were some other advertising pieces selling at the same auction that I did not bid on.They were very clever fakes --repros as they are known in the trade. The point of telling you this is that I could spot them but you might not be able to unless you had the knowledge and experience. The lesson here is that you don't want to go into an area you know nothing about. But if you do have experience in any specific area of art, antiques, collectibles, stamps, coins, or rare books, then this is a perfect --and fairly easy, way to build a profitable eBay business. You don't have to work in antiques and collectibles. There are plenty of other used goods that sell on eBay.In my book, The Complete eBay Marketing System, I list all sorts of areas of used goods that sell on eBay.They vary from clothing to books, to small appliances, sporting goods and the list goes on.I won't take the time to go into it here --it would make this article too long, but The Complete eBay Marketing System goes into great detail on how to select used items to sell, how and where to source them and how to sell them.Make Money on eBay with a Niche Market. The next strategy for making money on eBay is to develop a small specialized niche market. This is in fact what most of the successful eBay sellers do.I often get emails from eBay newbies asking me where they can buy DVDs, plasma TVs, Digital Cameras, iPods and other popular consumer electronic products.I suggest you forget trying to sell any popular mass consumer product. These fields are very crowded, highly competitive and dominated by many large sellers with resources and access to sources that the average person cannot duplicate unless you have thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to invest.Do you really think you can compete on eBay with Best Buy or Circuit City?A niche is a small specialized product category that a small seller can play in.I currently sell in several niches on eBay.One product I sell is a line of high-priced wood burning firepits.I do have some competitors, but not that many and I think I do a better job of selling them. The price point of $227 is a high average selling price, so I don't have to sell hundreds of items to make money. They are drop shipped direct from the manufacturer so I am not paying a middleman and the market for these products has been steady now for over two years. You can see my firepit auctions by clicking here. After looking at these you can link to my other auctions and see the other niche product categories we sell.If you go to the Free Articles page on the Skip McGrath web site I have a couple of articles about niche marketing that are worth reading if this strategy interests you.In both The Complete eBay Marketing System and The Wholesale Buying System, I cover how and where to find wholesale sources for your niche products.Make Money on eBay with Consignment Selling. The last strategy I want to point out for making money with eBay is consignment selling.I like to call this the perfect eBay business. No upfront investment in products, no inventory, high profits and minimal expenses.Once you qualify you can register as an eBay Trading Assistant and eBay will help you promote your business for free.Once you know how to sell on eBay, it is pretty easy to find people who have goods to sell.My strategy uses low cost targeted advertising.I spend less than $40 a month and can end up some months with over $10,000 or more worth of merchandise to sell .The trick to being successful in the eBay consignment business is in learning how to market your services, learning what type of merchandise to sell --and which to reject and how to control your fees. All of this is laid out in my best-selling book, How To Start & Run an eBay Consignment Business, published in early 2006 by McGraw Hill Publishing Co.The book includes all of the advertisements, forms, contracts and resources you need to start and run a profitable eBay consignment business. So back to the original question. Can the little guy still make money on eBay? The answer is "yes" if you apply some of the strategies and techniques I outlined here and if you take the time to learn the skills you will need. The answer is "maybe" if you try some other techniques or just stumble around trying to learn as you go.And the answer is probably "no" if you try and compete with the big boys unless you have the financial resources and business experience to actually build a large consumer products business.

Police Assessment Center Training - What Books Are Best For Study?

Police Assessment Center Training - What Books Are Best For Study?

The first question about studying. How long before your Assessment Center?Effective reading for real learning takes time, unlike skimming a book and hoping some of it sticks in your mind.If you have several months or even years before your process, you can study in a completely different way.If you have very limited time, your study must be focused .Approach your book and article purchases with time-lines in mind.Study to improve.Whatever you read or review, do it with the goal of learning to be more effective in your work, not just to get through a promotional process.Sadly, many people who do well in Assessment Centers have the potential for being much more effective than they require themselves to be after they are promoted. And, just as sadly, their organizations often do not require more of them either! Study to improve, then apply it in the Assessment Center. If you have a considerable amount of time before your Assessment Center. .Take advantage of the time to learn the knowledge and skills needed for success in the job you seek.Establish a regular reading schedule.Take notes about what you read--both what you agree with and what you disagree with.Think, don't just absorb.Purposely work to expand your viewpoint of your organization and your role in it, as well as the profession.*There are several good --admittedly not a lot that are truly excellent--books about police supervision and management. There are also several on leadership.Buy them used but in very good condition, from one of the online sources for used books.*Books about private sector supervision and management are also good resources.People are people, and the concepts are the same.Plus, the writers of those books are often a bit more skillful at conveying the thoughts than some police writers might be.Harsh sounding, but true! Put your focus on real skills, not on the parable books or pop-management books that are useful after promotion but that do not help you prepare for your process. The Briefcase Books series by McGraw-Hill will be far more helpful than "Who Moved My Seven Habits and Ate the Fish?" Those are good books for some, but will not be maximally helpful for your preparation. Also read about communication skills in general, with a focus on personal presentation skills, how to talk effectively in groups and how to listen.(You have to practice, too!).*Also consider websites as sources for ideas about how to handle difficult supervisory and leadership challenges.Just one quote or one illustration or anecdote, can be worth your time.Put sites on an RSS feed, so you can be notified when new articles appear.Print the most useful ones and create your own study resource.*Among the best sources for gaining expanded views of the profession and supervision and management are the magazines produced by the FBI National Academy Associates, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Sheriffs Association, and the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin. You need articles of that quality and with that approach, not articles only about tactical matters or that are negative about management or supervision.Talk to commanders and to your chief or sheriff and see if you can borrow magazines, with the promise to return them promptly. Then, scan the pages or copy them, so you will be able to continue to study them.*Read your Operations Manual (Policy manual) regularly, with a focus on the roles of the rank you seek.Do not wait until testing time to be an expert on the policies and procedures of your organization.Every time there is a new policy or program, study the material as though you will be tested on it.You might be! Assessment Centers often include exercises that require the candidate to know a recent policy or a change in procedures, and all ACs require that you be knowledgeable about your role.*Read about Assessment Center preparation. This type of reading is worthwhile for helping you understand the process and how you can use your learning.Do not buy a book that is primarily about learning tricks, tips and techniques for the process.Instead, focus on books that explain the process clearly, so you can see yourself participating in it.Then, it should help you understand how to apply your learning most effectively.Optimally, it will also give you some good overviews of knowledge about the KSAs (knowledge, skills and attitudes) that will be tested. When you have a solid understanding of how the process works, you will better understand why it is important to have well-rounded knowledge and skills. If you have only a short time to prepare. .If you have waited longer than you should have, you can still gain some insights and knowledge by reading.Pick one book that seems to have a well-rounded approach to supervision and management and read it with a focus on learning principles that might be useful.Focus on interpersonal communications, working with and through others to achieve a goal, how to motivate others and how to self-manage.Take notes and consider how your reading material might be applied in your Assessment Center.Read about Assessment Center preparation, with an emphasis on understanding how the process works. You will always perform better if you know how a process was developed and how it will be applied, rather than being blind about the process but trying to learn how to do well anyway.Start studying! .Whatever the time frame you have for study, it is never too early or to late to prepare.Remember. Your goal is to be excellent in your work, then apply your excellence in your Assessment Center.Excellence takes time, study and practice.Start studying today!

          The Right Hook

          The Right Hook

Have you fantasized about spreading word of your business on a top-rated TV show like The Today Show or Oprah?Eileen Roth, a professional organizer just a year into her business, was able to get on both shows using the time-honored technique of the news hook.Understanding the News Nook.Do-it-yourself PR people often tell prospects that the print and broadcast media will interview you simply because you are an expert in your field.Actually, the cold truth is that you have to earn the media's interest by providing them with the kind of news hook that shows..* You understand what their audience values.* You have tied what you want to promote into what's going on in the world today.* You have read, watched, or listened to that specific media outlet and know how you would fit in.Before you approach a media outlet you must brainstorm why your news will be of high interest to their audience. This is your pitch, be it a verbal pitch or in the form of a news release.Putting a Story Together for the Media.Your news must whet the appetite and imagination of the editor, reporter, or producer so he can visualize the compelling story at the nucleus of your pitch. He needs to see at a glance how your news will play out on paper, radio, or TV, and how your news will appeal to the needs and interests of his readers. This means you must first find relevant, newsworthy story ideas and condense them into information packed, "user friendly" pitches and releases that will shout "great story" to the media professionals reading them.Piggybacking on a Holiday. Most people only consider 'traditional' holidays like Christmas as a news peg, but you will find thousands of other holidays in Chase's Directory of Events (McGraw-Hill).This is where professional organizer Eileen Roth found National Clean Off Your Desk Day and used it as a news peg to contact TV producers.Along with her news release, she included an information sheet listing her seven principles for a clean desk. For the price of just a couple of first class stamps, Eileen Roth got invited to appear on the Today show (twice) and Oprah. You can too!If you want to promote your business on national television, take a "can do" hint from Roth.Check out Chase's Directory of Events at your local library today.
