Effective Communication - Review of Dan Kehoe's Book "Management in Action" Series

Effective Communication - Review of Dan Kehoe

AN ANCIENT MONARCH once requested wisdom first and foremost, in preference to all the riches of the world. As history shows, that king, David of Israel, struck the best treasure and discovered the secret to life some 3000-years ago. It's no different today. The greatest investment we can make in our lives and the lives of others, including our children and grandchildren, is create a hunger for wisdom.Where do you find wisdom? People often feel they're wise and have wisdom they want to share-so how do you sort the wheat from the chaff? Good question.I believe wisdom's cousin is truth-lasting and proven. That is what I think readers of Dan Kehoe's Management in Action series find. wisdom; truth that lasts because it works reliably, and truth that will be around long after we're gone. When you open one of Dan's books you find a myriad of information. The pithy, succinct articles always provoke thought and I generally find I need to discipline myself not to read too much-to allow a little of the truth to seep into and through my mind and heart.Incisive and punchy-like all of Dan's work, it cuts to the core of the issues at hand, facilitating (making easy) progress and improvement.Communication is the nexus of business and life; like wisdom, it is an eternal truth that we must always pay credence too, respecting the need for it, and the call to be effective users of it.Dan's book helps us 'get there'.I particularly relished reading Dan's articles on meetings in Effective Communication. It is such relief to read what I sense we all know, yet is never really said. His introductions lead logically to practical and detailed tips for enhancement of communication processes.I have found that there is that much advice available in Dan's writing / material, that it is easy to pick and choose what is relevant for my unique situation.Another feature of Dan's work which I value highly is the wisdom of others he injects-whether it is Dean Alston's cartoons or the plethora of philosophical quotes, his material is mind-stretching, and captivatingly so.Dan's articles in Effective Communication are action-oriented-a breath of fresh, invigorating air in a world that often theorizes too much, and gets too little done in the frustration of expecting change without actually doing anything. In this way, Dan's work is a legacy for sanity.Note. Dan Kehoe's series of books, Management in Action, and You Lead, They'll Follow are available Worldwide through publisher McGraw-Hill, North Ryde, Sydney, Australia. Some of these books are published in Chinese and Portuguese.Permission to conduct this review was gained from the author.
